Level 2 ASP Work: Planning Supply-Side Electrical Changes

Plan supply-side electrical changes with GMB’s accredited Level 2 ASP partner, including scope, network coordination, metering interfaces and outage preparation.

Some electrical projects extend beyond the internal circuits and involve the property’s connection to the electricity network. GMB Electrical Contractors coordinates Level 2 work through its accredited Level 2 ASP partner. GMB does not itself hold Level 2 ASP accreditation.

For coordinated connection works delivered through the accredited partner, see GMB’s Level 2 electrical service.

When supply-side planning becomes relevant

New connections, changes to overhead or underground services, consumer mains work, defect rectification and some supply upgrades can involve Level 2 scope. Meter relocation can also require coordination with the relevant parties. The exact work boundaries depend on the installation and project.

Not every switchboard upgrade or new appliance needs network work. Start by identifying what must change, then have the contractor confirm which parts belong to internal installation work and which require authorised supply-side delivery.

Provide the information needed to define the scope

Share the address, project drawings, proposed loads and any distributor notice or previous advice. For a defect notice, provide the complete document and its stated timing rather than a paraphrased description. Do not approach damaged service equipment to obtain extra photographs.

Builders should also identify demolition, excavation, roof or façade work that could affect the service arrangement. The team can then consider the proposed connection position, access and sequencing before other construction makes the work harder.

Coordinate approvals, metering and interruptions

Distributor processes, metering responsibilities and site readiness can influence the programme. An ASP partner’s attendance does not remove every approval or third-party dependency. Ask who manages each application, booking and handover interface.

Supply work may require planned disconnection. Identify occupants, tenants and equipment affected, including any electrically dependent needs. Agree notification, safe access and restoration arrangements. Avoid setting an inflexible completion date until the relevant constraints are understood.

Keep responsibilities clear in the quote

The proposal should distinguish partner-delivered Level 2 works from associated internal circuits, switchboard changes and other trades. Clarify excavation, reinstatement, access equipment and temporary arrangements where relevant. Unclear boundaries can leave a project waiting between trades.

At completion, ask what work was carried out, what notifications and documents are included and whether any follow-up remains. Keep the records with the property’s electrical information. Do not attempt to inspect, alter or reconnect service lines, metering equipment or consumer mains yourself.

  • Provide drawings, notices and the intended load changes.
  • Confirm the accredited partner’s scope and relevant authorisations.
  • Identify distributor and metering dependencies.
  • Agree outage communications, site readiness and completion records.
